Gattermann-Koch reaction

This is an industrial synthesis method for aromatic aldehydes discovered in 1897 by L. Gattermann and J. Koch of Germany. Aromatic aldehydes can be obtained in one step by reacting aromatic hydrocarbons with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride using copper(I) chloride and aluminum chloride as catalysts. Normally, alkylbenzenes react easily, but in the case of benzene or halogenated benzenes, the reaction is carried out under pressure. Nitrobenzene is used as the solvent, and it can also be used to synthesize polycyclic aromatic aldehydes.

1897年ドイツのガッターマンL.GattermannとコッホJ.A.Kochにより見いだされた芳香族アルデヒドの工業的合成法。芳香族炭化水素に塩化銅(I)と塩化アルミニウムを触媒として，一酸化炭素と塩化水素の混合物を作用させると，芳香族アルデヒドが1段階で得られる。通常アルキルベンゼンは容易に反応するが，ベンゼンやハロゲン化ベンゼンの場合には加圧下で反応を行わせる。溶媒としてニトロベンゼンが用いられ，多環式芳香族アルデヒドの合成にも適用される。
