…The seven kingdoms of Kent in the southeast (founded by the Jutes), Essex, which occupied the lower reaches of the Thames, Wessex, which developed in the west, Sussex in the south (all founded by the Saxons), East Anglia in the east, Mercia in the middle, and Northumbria in the north (all founded by the Angles). These kingdoms fought against the indigenous Britons and continued their conquests, but also competed among themselves for supremacy, and at the end of the 6th century, Kent became powerful under the rule of King Æthelbelft (Ethelbert) (reigned 560-616). It was under this king that the Anglo-Saxons were first converted to Christianity.
