[Died] December 4, 1732, London English playwright and poet. He moved to London at a young age and made his debut as a poet. He then turned to drama, but was not noticed. He gained instant popularity with The Beggar's Opera (1728). This play satirizes the politics of the time by telling the stories of London thieves and prostitutes, and is considered a masterpiece of ballad opera in theatrical history. It is also known for being adapted by Bertolt Brecht exactly 200 years later under the title The Threepenny Opera. His sequel, Polly (1729), incurred the wrath of Prime Minister Robert Walpole and was banned. His other works include the comedy Three Hours After Marriage (1717), written in collaboration with his friends Alexander Pope and John Arbuthnot, the witty poem Trivia: or, The Art of Walking the Streets of London (1716), and Fifty-one Fables in Rhyme (1727, 1738).

Gay, Edwin Francis

[Died] February 8, 1946, Pasadena, California. American economic historian. Known as the father of American economic history. After graduating from the University of Michigan, he studied in Europe from 1890 to 1902. After returning to the United States, he became a lecturer at Harvard University and a professor of economic history at the university. In 1917, he joined the government, and left academia until returning to Harvard in 1929. After returning to academia, he became a researcher at the Huntington Library in 1936, a position he held until 1946. His academic achievements were his pioneering research on the first enclosures, which established the foundations of economic history in this period. Although he never published a single book, his representative paper is "Enclosures in England in the Sixteenth Century," which was published in the academic journal "Quarterly Journal of Economics" (1903).

アメリカの経済史学者。アメリカ経済史学界の父といわれる。ミシガン大学卒業後，1890～1902年ヨーロッパ留学，帰国後ハーバード大学講師に就任，同大学経済史学教授を経て 17年官界入りし，29年ハーバード大学に復帰するまで学界を離れた。学界復帰後，36年ハンティントン・ライブラリー研究員となり，46年までその職にあった。彼の学問的業績は，第1次エンクロージャーの先駆的研究にあり，彼によってこの時期の経済史的基礎づけがなされた。著書は1冊も公刊されていないが，その代表的論文は，学界誌"Quarterly Journal of Economics" (1903) に掲載された『16世紀イングランドにおけるエンクロージャー』 Enclosures in England in the Sixteenth Centuryである。
