Born 30 June 1685, Barnstaple [Died] December 4, 1732, London English playwright and poet. He moved to London at a young age and made his debut as a poet. He then turned to drama, but was not noticed. He gained instant popularity with The Beggar's Opera (1728). This play satirizes the politics of the time by telling the stories of London thieves and prostitutes, and is considered a masterpiece of ballad opera in theatrical history. It is also known for being adapted by Bertolt Brecht exactly 200 years later under the title The Threepenny Opera. His sequel, Polly (1729), incurred the wrath of Prime Minister Robert Walpole and was banned. His other works include the comedy Three Hours After Marriage (1717), written in collaboration with his friends Alexander Pope and John Arbuthnot, the witty poem Trivia: or, The Art of Walking the Streets of London (1716), and Fifty-one Fables in Rhyme (1727, 1738).
