Sayers, Dorothy Leigh
Born June 13, 1893, Oxford
[died] December 17, 1957, Witham, Essex British female author and playwright. Graduated from Oxford University. She started out as a copywriter and turned to detective fiction, portraying amateur detective Lord Wimsey in Strong Poison (1930) and Hangman's Holiday (33). Her interest in religion grew around the time of World War II, and she achieved success with The Man Born to Be King (41), a series of radio dramas about Jesus Christ. She was also renowned as a Dante scholar, and translated The Divine Comedy.
