[1] 〘Noun〙① A medical facility for the sick founded by Empress Komyo in the second year of Tenpyo ( 730 ). At first, the facility was funded by the Fujiwara clan, but later it became a government office, with four officials of the same rank (betto, shi, magistrate, and chief clerk) and a doctor appointed. It carried out relief activities alongside Hiden'in, which was established in both the left and right capitals, to treat the sick who were taken in and to provide relief for orphans and the poor in the capital, using medicinal herbs sent as tribute from various provinces. Similar facilities were also established in various provinces and temples.
