A brackish lake in eastern Aomori Prefecture, sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the Sanbongi Plateau. It has an area of 62.3 square kilometers, a circumference of 67.4 kilometers, and a maximum depth of 24.4 meters. It is connected to Aneyu and Uchinuma by waterways, and to the north, the lake area is made up of Tamogi, Ichiyanagi, Takahoko, and Obuchi rivers. The Shichinohe, Doba, and Sadoro rivers flow into the southwestern part of the lake, and the Takase River flows out into the Pacific Ocean from the northeastern corner. The lake is slightly lower than the surrounding plateau, and its outlet was closed by the development of coastal sand dunes. At high tide, seawater flows in through the Takase River, and both freshwater and saltwater fish live here. Eels, smelt, carp, and crucian carp are abundant, and Takase River is lined with "waiting huts" where people wait to catch fish. Smelt fishing by drilling holes in the frozen lake surface in winter is a unique seasonal sight. Shell mounds are distributed on the surrounding plateau, including Noguchi, Waseda, and Futatsumori. The flat plateau is covered with grassland and has long been used as a horse pasture. Most of the lake water is used for agricultural purposes, and water is taken from the pumping stations at Yachigashira, Sabishirotai, Takizawadaira, and Lake Ogawara to irrigate 2,100 hectares of rice paddies. The Lake Ogawara Comprehensive Development Project is currently underway as part of the "Mutsu Ogawara Development Plan."
