...They were also called Toshiyori, Shukuro, Kakuro, and Shishusei. As the "elder" (older man, adult) of the Tokugawa Shogun family that ruled the whole country, they reported directly to the Shogun and, under his trust, controlled the national government by commanding the Shoshidai, Sanbugyo, Tokokubugyo, and Ometsuke (the "naka" in the Roju means a group, as in "renchu" or "young manchu," and also has the function of showing respect, as in "shu"). They were also called Kahan no Retsu, which means those who signed the Roju Rensho Hosho (Roju Hosho) and added their seal (kao). Even before the Tokugawa became a daimyo, as with other Sengoku and early modern daimyo, the "ro" had a say in being the commander of each of the military corps belonging to Tokugawa Ieyasu....
