A Jodo Shinshu Honganji temple in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture. Founded in the early 14th century by Zendo, who converted to Honganji Kakunyo. During the time of the third head priest, Hoju, it was the base of the Shinshu sect in Kosai. In 1468, it was attacked by monks from Mount Hiei, and retreated from Katata for a time, but returned in 1470 after paying a huge tribute to the temple gate. Katata was a key location for land and water transportation, and Zendo and Hoju are said to have run a dyeing shop. The temple's followers were merchants and craftsmen who engaged in a wide range of commercial activities, and a "temple town" was formed. The fifth head priest, Meishu, was shunned three times for opposing Jitsunyo, who promoted direct devotion of the followers, and the central temple for the Kosai followers was then moved to Katata Jikyou-ji.
