1905‐97 Thai politician and lawyer. Born into a royal family, he studied in the UK in 1924 and completed his law studies at Oxford University. Upon returning to the UK in 1929, he worked at the Ministry of Justice, later transferring to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was appointed ambassador to the US in 1940. During World War II, he opposed the Thai government's alliance with Japan, and founded and led the anti-Japanese movement organisation Free Thailand in the US. After the war, he served as Prime Minister for about a year from 1945, and contributed to the recovery of Thailand's international standing, which had declined after the war. He participated in the founding of the Democratic Party as vice-chairman in 1946, and became its leader in 1968. He consistently led party politics for about 30 years in a political climate of military dictatorship, and won the support of urban residents.
