During the Nara period, Emperor Gensho built a villa in Izumi County, Kawachi Province, as a villa for wintering. It is also written as Chinu Imperial Villa or Izuminomiya. In the Shoku Nihongi, the entry for March of the second year of Reiki (716) states that "The Izumi and Hinen counties of Kawachi Province were divided and used for Chinu Palace (they provided the labor and expenses for construction)," and the entry for April of the same year states that "The three counties of Otori, Izumi, and Hinen were divided and the Izumi ward was established," so up until that point the three counties had been included in Kawachi Province. A ward is a district (or office) that, in addition to the administrative duties of a normal province, also serves as the guardian of the villa. An example is Yoshinogen, which had the Yoshino Imperial Villa (Yoshino Palace) for summering within its jurisdiction. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
