Descendants of the Maya who live in the tropical rainforests of Chiapas, Mexico, near the Guatemalan border. Population: about 200. They disappeared in the late 18th century to escape Catholic missionaries, but were rediscovered in the late 19th century when timber companies moved in. After World War II, a major transformation of Lacandon society occurred as chicle collectors advanced into the interior of the country. There are no class differences in this society, with the nuclear family being the basic unit and being integrated into exogamous patrilineal clans. Cross-cousin marriage is preferred, and polygamy is common. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
