A city in northern Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1929. It is located on the Mino-Mikawa Plateau upstream of the Yata River, and is served by the Meitetsu Seto Line and the Aichi Loop Line. It produces high-quality clay and has been known for Seto ware since the Kamakura period, and has also produced porcelain since the Bunka era. It is Japan's largest ceramics city, producing a large number of Japanese and Western tableware, insulators, and ceramic art. In recent years, the electrical equipment industry has grown to the point where it has surpassed the ceramics industry in terms of manufacturing shipment value (2003). There is a ceramics center and Jodokoji Temple, the mausoleum of Tokugawa Yoshinao. The 2005 Aichi World Expo was held here. Area: 111.40 km2 .
