Mess box - Hango

An aluminum container that can be used as both a rice cooker and a lunch box and can be carried outdoors. Before the Meiji period, portable meals consisted of dried rice or rice balls that were often packed in a suitcase. Mess boxes were used in the military for field use from the Meiji period, and were improved upon, and later came to be widely used for camping, mountain climbing, and other activities. The basic shape is a deep-bottomed oval with a concave cross section, a handle, and a hanging handle (inner lid) inside. Two hanging handles can cook about 640 grams (four gou) of rice, enough for two meals of lunch and emergency food during outdoor activities. It is suitable for cooking rice over a campfire, but if you are using a kerosene or gas stove as in recent years, a pot with a wide base is better. In addition to the shapes mentioned above, there are also square and handle-mounted shapes. Some are used in Southeast Asia and other places with quite different shapes.

野外に携帯して利用できる炊飯器と弁当箱兼用のアルミ製の容器。明治以前は携帯食は干飯(ほしいい)や握り飯を行李(こうり)に入れるものが多く用いられていた。飯盒が明治時代から軍隊で野戦用に用いられ、改良されて、のちこれがキャンプや登山などに広く用いられるようになった。基本的な形は、底が深く、断面は片側がへこんだ楕円(だえん)形で吊手(つりて)があり、中に掛子(かけご)（中蓋(なかぶた)）がある。容量は掛子二杯で約640グラム（四合）の米飯がちょうど炊ける程度で、野外活動での昼食と非常食の二食分程度として利用できる。たき火を利用した炊飯には適しているが、近年のように石油こんろ、ガスこんろを利用する場合には、底面の広いコッヘルなどのほうがよい。形状は前述のもののほか、角型、持ち手のついたものなどがある。東南アジアなどで用いられているものにはかなり形状の異なるものもある。
