French cellist. Born in Paris, he studied piano at first, but switched to cello after losing the use of his right leg due to polio. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made his debut in Paris in 1924. Since 1936, he has performed all over the world, collaborating with Szigeti, Primrose, Thibaud, Cortot, Backhaus, and others, and gained fame. He was a professor at his alma mater from 1941 to 1949. His repertoire is wide, ranging from JS Bach to works of his contemporaries, and he has dedicated concertos and sonatas to Roussel, Martinu, F. Martin, and Poulenc. His performances are characterized by elegance and rich nuance. He first visited Japan in 1954. The period when Fournier, A. Navarra (1911-1988), Tortelier, and M. Gendron (1920-1990) continued their performance activities was also the golden age of the French cello world. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
