1869‐1941 Swedish author. Born in Stockholm, he became a newspaper reporter. In his novel The Youth of Martin Birk, he describes the psychology of love and morality of the dreamy and willless protagonist up to middle age in a simple and delicate style, with a fin de siècle melancholy. In addition to his novels Dr. Grasse (1905), Serious Play (1912), and the play Gertrude (1906), his early collection of short pieces, Anthology of Short Stories (1898), makes good use of his simple style and also provides excellent descriptions of the scenery of Stockholm.
