Yamada-ryu Sokyo performer and composer. Grandson of Nakanoshima Shosei (1838-94), the first head of the Nakanoshima school. Born in Honjo, Tokyo. From the age of six, he learned the classics under the strict guidance of his mother Kiku, and further studied under the first Marutashima Noh, the third Nakanoshima Shosen, and the first Takahashi Eisei. He also studied Nagauta and Itchu-bushi. In 1925 (Taisho 14), he founded the Shuncho-kai with the third head Shosen and the fourth Yamato Shorei, and after Shosen's death in 1928 (Showa 3), he succeeded the fourth Nakanoshima head according to his will. From 1931, he became involved with the Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts), where he taught many young people as a lecturer and professor (1950-72). He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1986, a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1966, and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1983. Not only did he demonstrate outstanding skill as a performer of the koto and shamisen, but he was also a pioneer in the avant-garde composition of many contemporary Japanese pieces, including "Kagero no Odori," "Sekiheki no Fu," and "Mitsu no Dansho."
