French scholar of Southeast Asian history. He was professor at the Ecole francois Far Eastern in Hanoi (now Paris) (1914-17), director of the Siamese National Library of Bajranana (18-27), director of the Royal Institute of Siam (27-28), and director of the Ecole francois Far Eastern (29-46). In his later years he was a member of the Institut de France. He spent 35 years in the region and made a great contribution to the study of Indochina history through his epigraphic research. His major works include Les États hindouisés d'Indochine et d'Indonésie (48) and Les Peuples de la péninsule Indochinoise: histoire-civilisation (62).

フランスの東南アジア史学者。ハノイにあったフランス極東学院 (現在パリ) の教授 (1914～17) ，シャム国立バジラニャーナ図書館館長 (18～27) ，シャム王立研究所所長 (27～28) ，極東学院院長 (29～46) を歴任。晩年はフランス学士院のメンバーであった。 35年間に及ぶ現地体験をもち，碑銘学的研究によってインドシナの歴史研究に多大の貢献をした。主著『インドシナ，インドネシアにおけるインド化した諸国』 Les États hindouisés d'Indochine et d'Indonésie (48) ，『インドシナ半島の人々－文明史』 Les Peuples de la péninsule Indochinoise: histoire-civilisation (62) などのほか多くの著述がある。
