Reinhardt, A.

...Abstract Expressionism, which emerged in New York in the 1940s, had a background in Cubism and Surrealism and was a response to the European Informel movement. This movement consisted of the Action Painting school (J. Pollock, W. de Kooning, Franz Kline (1910-62), etc.), which introduced violent movement into the picture plane, and the Color-Field Painting movement (M. Rothko, Barnett Newman (1905-70), Clyfford Still (1904-80), Ad Reinhardt (1913-67), etc.), which used flat colored surfaces. Both groups created shocking paintings that filled huge canvases. Abstract Expressionism was at its height from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s, but with the deaths of Klein and Pollock and the problems that Abstract Expressionism itself faced, it began to collapse in the late 1950s, and was replaced by Pop Art and Neo-Abstract (Post-Painterly Abstraction).

From [Japonism]

...The works of the Northwestern School, which are imbued with a mystical quality, are evaluated as symbolic paintings that are different from Eastern paintings. The work of New York Abstract Expressionist Ad Reinhardt (1913-67), Japanese-Americans Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Kenzo Okada, and Isamu Noguchi are also considered part of late Japonism. The movement to expel Japanese immigrants and the Pacific War, which occurred in parallel with the development of Japonism, complicated the character of American Japonism.

Japanese:
