Kamishimo (top and bottom)

Japanese: 裃∥上下 - かみしも

Originally, it meant a garment consisting of an upper garment and an undergarment, that is, two parts, one set, and was usually referred to as such when the garment and hakama were made of the same fabric, such as in "top and bottom of what color" (illustration). Therefore, when simply saying "top and bottom," it could mean hitatare, suou, or omon, but in the early modern period, when kataginu and hakama became common as official clothing among samurai, the one made of the same fabric was specifically called "kamishimo."

もとは上に着る衣と下にはく袴，つまり上下2部で1具をなす衣服をいい，ふつう〈何色の上下〉などというように，衣と袴が共布（ともぎれ）でできている場合をこのように称した（イラスト）。したがって，ただ〈上下〉といった場合は直垂（ひたたれ）でも素襖（すおう），大紋でもいいわけであるが，近世になって肩衣（かたぎぬ）と袴が武士の間で公服として一般に行われるようになると，これが共布でできているものをとくに〈裃〉といった。
