Hisashige Nagaoka

A feudal samurai of the Aizu Domain (Fukushima Prefecture) at the end of the Edo period, and an anti-Meiji government patriot. Born in Wakamatsu, Mutsu Province (Aizuwakamatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture). He studied at the domain school Nisshinkan and then at the Shohei Academy in Edo, where he was well versed in classics and history, and also good at poetry. He fought bravely in the defense of Aizu Castle during the Boshin War, went to Nagaoka in Echigo to hold military councils with Tsugunosuke Kawai, and also fought a close battle with the government forces on the Nikko Kaido. After surrendering, he was imprisoned in Tokyo, but in 1870 he was appointed deputy junior councilor of the Tonan Domain (Aomori Prefecture), and after the abolition of the domain, he was appointed deputy senior councilor of Aomori Prefecture and head of the Tanabe (Aomori Prefecture) branch office. However, he could not bear the harsh treatment of Aizu, and in 1874 he published the Hyoron Shimbun with Ebihara Muneta and others, supporting the political views of the group led by Saigo Takamori, who had retreated to Satsuma-nan, and fiercely attacking the government. He attempted to overthrow the government in concert with Maehara Issei in Hagi, but his plot was discovered in advance and he was arrested at Shianbashi Bridge in Chiba, and he died in prison the following year.

幕末の会津藩(福島県)藩士,反明治政府の志士。陸奥国若松(福島県会津若松市)生まれ。藩校日新館,次いで江戸の昌平黌に学び経史に通じ,詩もよくした。戊辰戦争会津守城戦に敢闘,越後長岡に赴き河井継之助と軍議し,また日光街道で官軍と接戦した。降伏後,東京に収監されたが,明治3(1870)年,斗南藩(青森県)権少参事,廃藩後は青森県権大属,田名部(青森県)支庁長に任じた。しかし苛酷な会津処分は憤激に堪えず,7年海老原穆らと『評論新聞』を発刊して,薩南に退去した西郷隆盛一派の政見を支持して激しく政府を攻撃した。萩の前原一誠に呼応して政府転覆に決起せんとしたが事前に発覚して千葉思案橋で捕縛され,翌年獄中で没した。
