Garonne [river] - Garonne
A river in southwestern France. It originates in the Maladeta Mountains in the central Pyrenees, flows north, passes through Toulouse, turns northwest, joins the Dordogne north of Bordeaux, and empties into the Bay of Biscay. The lower reaches are called the Gironde, and are a bay 5 to 15 km wide. The total length is 575 km. There are many vineyards in the basin, and hydroelectric power is also thriving.
