Székely Bertalan

Székely Bertalan
1835‐1910
Hungarian painter. After graduating from the Academy in Vienna, he went to Munich in 1859 to study under K. von Piloty. He painted a wide range of subjects, but his historical paintings, which implicitly criticized the politics following the failure of the War of Independence, contributed to raising Hungarian patriotism against Habsburg rule. In addition to painting frescoes depicting Hungarian history with K. Lotz in the Cathedral of Pécs, in his later years he was engaged in decorating public buildings such as the Matthias Church in Budapest with frescoes.
