An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). It is a large moth with a span of 13 to 15 cm. Its wings are reddish brown with a white band in the center, a large crescent-shaped white mark at the edge of the central lobe and bordered with black, and there is a black mark on the upper outer edge of the forewing. It is widely distributed in North America. It produces one egg per year and overwinters as a pupa. The larvae are green caterpillars that reach a body length of 10 cm when mature. They are polyphagous, feeding on the leaves of cherry trees and many other broad-leaved trees. Adults appear from spring to early summer. This Saturniidae is very common in North America, and is used as an experimental animal because it is easy to raise and large and easy to handle.
