An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). It is a large moth with a span of 13 to 15 cm. Its wings are reddish brown with a white band in the center, a large crescent-shaped white mark at the edge of the central lobe and bordered with black, and there is a black mark on the upper outer edge of the forewing. It is widely distributed in North America. It produces one egg per year and overwinters as a pupa. The larvae are green caterpillars that reach a body length of 10 cm when mature. They are polyphagous, feeding on the leaves of cherry trees and many other broad-leaved trees. Adults appear from spring to early summer. 鱗翅目ヤママユガ科の昆虫(イラスト)。大型のガで開張13~15cm。翅は赤褐色,中央部に白帯があり,中室端に大きな新月型の白紋があって,黒色で縁取られ,前翅外縁の上部には黒紋がある。北アメリカに広く分布している。年1化で,さなぎで越冬する。幼虫は緑色の芋虫で,老熟すると体長10cmに達する。多食性で,サクラそのほか多くの広葉樹の葉を食べる。成虫は春から初夏に出現する。このヤママユガは,北アメリカでごくふつうに見られ,飼育が楽で,しかも大型で取り扱いやすいため実験動物として利用される。
