"Arrowsmith" (1925), which depicts a conscientious and dedicated scientist who fights against the capitalist system in a research laboratory, is a work based on joint research with a scientist, and at least the protagonist is not the subject of caricature. "Elmer Gantry" (1927), which has a religious businessman as its protagonist, is a shocking caricature of the process by which a snob without a shred of conscience becomes a successful pastor of a major church, and there are few books that are as critical of American Christianity as this one. ...
