A Christian pastor in the Meiji period. Born in Edo Shitaya Okachimachi as the third son of Shogunate vassal Takeuchi Gozaemon Naomichi. In 1847, he was adopted into the Okuno family. He served Prince Rinnoji (Prince Kitashirakawa Yoshihisa). He deserted after losing the Battle of Ueno Shogitai. He became acquainted with JC Hepburn through Ogawa Yoshisuzu, and became a Japanese language teacher, helping him edit a Japanese-English dictionary. He heard the story of Peter who betrayed Jesus from the missionary JH Bara, and was deeply moved by the resemblance to his own weakness. In 1875, he was baptized by SR Brown. He became a pastor at Kojimachi (Takanawa) Church and other churches. 明治時代のキリスト教牧師。江戸下谷御徒町に幕臣竹内五左衛門直通の3男として生まれる。弘化4(1847)年奥野家の養子になる。輪王寺宮(北白川宮能久親王)に仕える。上野彰義隊の戦いでは負け戦となり,脱走する。小川義綏の紹介でJ.C.ヘボンと知り合い,日本語教師となり,和英辞典の編集を助ける。宣教師J.H.バラからイエスを裏切ったペトロの話を聞き,自分の弱さと重ね感激する。明治8(1875)年S.R.ブラウンから受洗。麹町(高輪)教会などの牧師となる。幼少時から,国学,書,歌を習い,その才能を日本語聖書の翻訳と版下書き,また『新撰讃美歌』の編集に生かした。<参考文献>黒田惟信編『奥野昌綱先生略伝並歌集』
