Red Cliffs

Japanese: 赤壁 - せきへき

[1] The southern bank of the Yangtze River in Jiayu County, southwest of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. An ancient battlefield where the allied forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeated Cao Cao's warships at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The two characters for "Red Cliffs" are carved into the steep rock slope. [2] The name refers to Red Nose Mountain on the left bank of the Yangtze River in Huanggang County, west of Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. It is known as the place where Su Shi of the Song Dynasty visited and composed the Fu (Feuilles de Red Cliffs) by mistake, thinking it was the ancient battlefield of Red Cliffs, and was named after that historical event.

[一] 中国、湖北省武漢市の南西、嘉魚県にある揚子江の南岸をいう。後漢末、孫権・劉備の連合軍が曹操の軍船を破った古戦場。切り立った岩の斜面に赤壁の二字がきざまれている。[二] 中国、湖北省武漢市の西、黄岡県にある揚子江左岸の赤鼻山をいう。宋の蘇軾(そしょく)がここに遊び、赤壁の古戦場と誤って赤壁賦(せきへきのふ)を詠じた所として知られ、その故事にちなんでつけられた名。
