A state in New England, United States. Abbreviated as RI. One of the original 13 states, it joined the Union in 1790, becoming the 13th. With an area of 3,144 km2, it is the smallest state in the United States, smaller than Nara Prefecture. Population 990,000 (1996). The state capital and largest city is Providence. The state is made up of hills and plains, and has many glacial lakes. Narragansett Bay is in the southeastern part of the state, and both the population and industry are concentrated on the bay shore.
