Formosan termite - Ieshiroari (English spelling)

Japanese: イエシロアリ - いえしろあり(英語表記)formosan termite
Formosan termite - Ieshiroari (English spelling)
An insect of the Rhinotermitidae family (illustration). This termite causes severe damage to buildings and standing trees, and is found in the southern coast of Honshu west of the Kanto region, the lowlands of Shikoku and Kyushu, the Ryukyus, and Chugoku. Soldiers have a forehead gland on their heads that secretes a milky mucus when they sense danger. The winged termites are brown and fly in swarms on warm, humid nights in June and July, and often gather around electric lights. They build a processed nest consisting of numerous small chambers arranged in concentric circles around a royal chamber and an outer wall of clay, which can reach a diameter of over 1m. Water-collecting ant trails extend from this nest to groundwater and condensed areas of water pipes, and worker ants carry water and moisten the area while they cause damage, so the damage range extends to the entire building.
