A general term for birds in the Mesoenatidae family, or one of them. This family consists of three species: Mesitornis variegata , M. unicolor , and Monias benschi , and is endemic to Madagascar. Total length is about 25 to 30 cm. All species are brown from the head to the back, wings, and tail, and the chest and abdomen are white or light yellowish brown, and some species have a white and black brow line and brown spots on the chest and abdomen. ツル目クイナモドキ科Mesoenatidaeの鳥の総称,またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科はムナジロクイナモドキMesitornis variegata,クイナモドキM.unicolorおよびメスアカクイナモドキMonias benschiの3種からなり,マダガスカル島の特産である。全長約25~30cm。どの種も頭上から背,翼,尾は褐色,胸腹部は白色ないし淡黄褐色で,種によっては白と黒の眉線や胸腹部に褐色斑がある。
