Located in southeastern Brazil, it is the state that has been most industrialized, urbanized, and modernized. It has an area of 247,320 km2 and a population of 33,699,600 (1995), making it the most populous state in Brazil. Its capital is São Paulo. The high coastal mountain range (Serra do Mar) is located near the coast, and 85% of the state is on the Brazilian Plateau, which is 300-900 meters above sea level and slopes inland. Most of the rivers flow into the interior of the state. Half of the population is concentrated in large cities, and the urban population is 88.6%. Exceptionally for a developing country, medium-sized cities are well developed, with 33 cities with populations of over 100,000 and seven with populations of over 300,000.
