This fishing gear is used to catch octopuses by taking advantage of their habit of hiding in holes on the seabed. The size and structure of the clay pots vary slightly depending on the region, but they usually have an opening diameter of 10 to 20 centimeters, a depth of 20 to 40 centimeters, and weigh 1 to 1.5 kilograms. The fishing method is to attach branch lines of about 1 meter to a 100 to 200 meter main line at 5 to 10 meter intervals, and tie one pot to each end. This is made into a single line, and 10 to 20 lines are cast on the seabed near reefs where octopuses are likely to live. After leaving it for 2 to 3 days, the main line is reeled in to pull up the pots, the octopus inside is stored on the boat, and the empty pot is thrown back into the sea. To improve fishing performance, lidded octopus pots are also used, in which bait is placed inside the concrete or plastic pots and the lid closes when the octopus takes the bait. Other seashells include red and long shells used to catch octopus, and wooden box-shaped ones used to catch Pacific octopus.
