Ontario is an industrial city and the capital of the province. It is located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. It has a population of 2,481,494, and the metropolitan area population of 4,682,897 (2001), making it the largest in Canada. 61% of the population are of British descent, with the remaining 8% being of Italian descent and 7% being of Eastern European descent, and immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Central and South America, making it a melting pot of races. However, Montreal has a strong sense of being a British city compared to the French Montreal. There is also a large Japanese population, and two weekly Japanese-language newspapers are published. It is located in the south of Canada, and the average temperature in January is quite mild at -6.7°C. It is the central city on the Canadian side of the industrial region along the Great Lakes, and the vehicle industry, agricultural machinery industry, electrochemistry, metallurgy, etc. are developed by utilizing the abundant electricity from Niagara Falls. It is also a major center of processing industries such as food processing, printing, and sewing. It has a port where ocean-going ships can enter, and grains, meat, lumber, etc. are exported from the port.

Founded by the British in 1793 at the old French trading post of Forrouillet, the city was formerly called York. Its current name, which means "meeting place" in Indian, was adopted when the city was incorporated in 1834. At the time, the population was less than 10,000, but it developed rapidly thanks to its strategic location on the roads and the economic development of its hinterland, and it became the capital of Ontario when the Canadian Confederation was established on July 1, 1867. The city is dotted with orthogonal streets and beautiful parks of various sizes. Famous places include the University of Toronto, founded in 1827, St. James Cathedral, St. Michael's Cathedral, and the Fort. The central shopping street is called Yonge Street, and is lively all year round. The National Exhibition Hall, built on a site of 950,000 square meters on the lakeside at the southern end of the city, is world famous for hosting the International Trade Exposition in June, the Industrial Exposition at the end of August, and the Agricultural Exposition in November every year. Nearby, there are amusement parks, parks, outdoor music venues, and the Ontario Place is a place of relaxation for the citizens. Toronto Island is also a large park. Another famous landmark of the city is City Hall, two buildings representing the administrative offices of the former City of Toronto and the metropolitan area that complement each other, and the square is a skating rink for citizens in the winter. It is the center of culture, politics, economy, and everything else.

カナダ、オンタリオ州の工業都市で、同州の州都。オンタリオ湖北西岸に位置する。人口248万1494、大都市圏人口468万2897（2001）はカナダ第一である。うち61％がイギリス系で、ほかにイタリア系8％、東欧系7％などヨーロッパ、アジア、中南米各地からの移住者がおり、人種のるつぼとなっている。しかし、フランス系のモントリオールに対するイギリス系都市としての意識は強い。日系人も多く、週刊の邦字新聞も2紙発行されている。カナダでも南に位置し、1月の平均気温は零下6.7℃とかなり温和である。五大湖沿岸工業地域のカナダ側の中心都市で、ナイアガラ滝からの豊富な電力を利用して車両工業、農業機械工業、電気化学、冶金(やきん)などが発達している。ほかに食品加工、印刷、縫製などの加工工業の一大中心地でもある。航洋船が入港できる港をもち、港からは穀物類や食肉、木材などを輸出している。

　フランス人の古い交易所であるフォールルーイエにイギリス人が1793年に建設し、かつてはヨークとよばれていた。1834年の市制施行とともにインディアン語で「集会の場所」の意の現名称となる。当時の人口は1万人足らずであったが、交通上の要地と後背地の経済発達のおかげで急速に発展し、1867年7月1日カナダ連邦が誕生すると同時にオンタリオ州の州都となった。市街地は直交状街路で、大小の美しい公園が散在する。1827年創立のトロント大学、セント・ジェームズ寺院、セント・ミカエル寺院、堡塁(ほうるい)など名所となっている。中心商店街はヨング街とよばれ、一年中活気を呈している。市街南端の湖畔には95万平方メートルの敷地につくられた国民展示会の会場があり、ここでは毎年6月に国際貿易博覧会、8月末に工業博覧会、11月に農業博覧会が開かれることで世界的に有名である。付近には遊園地、公園、野外音楽場などを備え、オンタリオ・プレイスとして市民の憩いの場となっている。また、トロント・アイランドは一大公園である。市のもう一つの名所は市庁舎で、旧トロント市と大都市圏の行政庁を示す二つの建物は互いに補い合う形をとり、広場は冬季市民のスケートリンクとなっている。文化、政治、経済とあらゆる面での中心地である。
