Japanese: コチ(鯒) - コチ

A species of marine fish in the family Platycephalidae, order Scorpaeniformes, or a general term for fish in the same family Platycephalidae. The Japanese lanternfish and the rat goby, which are classified as Perciformes, are also called flatheads. In the Kanto region, the Japanese lanternfish is called goby, but it is a different species from the flathead of the family Platycephalus. The flathead, Platycephalus indicus (illustration), is widely distributed in the Pacific and Indian Oceans south of central Japan, and lives in sandy and muddy areas about 200 meters deep from the coast. Its body is thin from top to bottom, and its head is large and covered with bony plates with spiny protrusions.

カサゴ目コチ科の海産魚の1種，または同科Platycephalidaeに属する魚類の総称。分類上はスズキ目に入るネズッポやネズミゴチなどもコチと称せられることがある。また，関東地方ではネズッポのことをメゴチと呼ぶが，コチ科のメゴチとは別種である。コチPlatycephalus indicus（イラスト）は日本中部以南の太平洋～インド洋海域に広く分布し，沿岸から水深200m前後の砂泥地にすむ。体は上下に薄く，頭は大きくて骨板に包まれ，とげ状の突起がある。
