Shingoro Ikushima

A Kabuki actor from the early Edo period. His pen name was Hishiga. His previous name was Noda Kuranojo. He changed his name to Ikushima Shingoro around 1692. He had a soft style of acting that was said to be exactly like that of the first Nakamura Shichisaburo, and he was very popular with women, specializing in nuregoto, yatsushigoto, and tanzen (performances that reflected the customs of dandy men from the early Edo period). His nuregoto, which he performed wearing heavy face powder and crimson underwear, is thought to have been quite provocative. From 1704 (Hōei 1), he mainly performed at the Edo Yamamura-za, but in the spring of 1714 (Shōtoku 4), he was found to have been in a relationship with Ejima, a maid in Edo Castle, and was exiled to Miyakejima. As a result of this Ejima-Ikushima incident, the Yamamura-za was closed, and thereafter, Edo Kabuki was dominated by three troupes: Nakamura, Ichimura, and Morita. 江戸初期の歌舞伎役者。俳名菱賀。前名野田蔵之丞。元禄5(1692)年ごろに生島新五郎と改めた。初代中村七三郎そのままといわれたやわらかみのある芸風で,濡れ事,やつし事,丹前(江戸初期の伊達男の風俗を写した演技)を得意とし,女性に大変な人気があった。濃い白粉と紅の下着で演じる彼の濡れ事は,かなり扇情的なものであったと想像される。宝永1(1704)年からは主に江戸山村座に出勤していたが,正徳4(1714)年春,江戸城の奥女中絵島と通じていたことが発覚し,三宅島へ流された。この絵島生島事件によって山村座は廃絶し,以後江戸の歌舞伎は中村,市村,森田の3座となった。没年には異説がある。<参考文献>『歌舞伎評判記集成』1期
