…In the Elizabethan era, when the Church of England was established, the ecclesiastical and clerical theories of continental theologians, especially Calvin, were dominant, but at the end of the 16th century, Richard Bancroft, Hooker, and others positioned the Church of England as a branch of the universal (Catholic) Church and advocated the need for a bishopric based on apostolic succession. In the 17th century, Lancelot Andrewes and Lord William Laud emphasized the Catholic nature of the Church to the Puritans, and Laud was executed during the Puritan Revolution, so the High Churchmen gained the initiative at the time of the Restoration. After the Glorious Revolution, many High Churchmen refused to submit to William III, so the leaders of the church and state favored the Low Churchmen for a long time, but the Oxford Movement of John Keble, Edward Bouverie Pusey, J.H. Newman, and others reinvigorated the High Churchmen, and they have since become a major force within the Anglican Church to this day. …
