A fraternity is an association or organization of American or Canadian college students formed around a common purpose or interest, and membership is usually only possible through solicitation by the organization. It is generally an all-male organization, and a similar organization for female students is called a sorority. The word fraternity comes from the Latin frater, meaning "brother," and its origins can be traced back to the colleges of medieval Europe and England. Fraternities are also called Greek-letter societies, as their names usually contain Greek letters, such as Phi Beta Kappa, the first American fraternity formed at the College of William and Mary in 1776.
