Ikaruganosho

Japanese:
Ikaruganosho

The Horyuji Manor in Harima Province. The area is centered around Taishi Town, Ibo County, Hyogo Prefecture. According to the "Garan Engi Naroru Kishi Zaichou" (Horyu-ji Garan Engi Naroru Kishi Zaichou) from 747 (Tenpyo 19), Ibo County had over 219 cho of rice paddies, as well as gardens, forests, ponds, manor storehouses, and 50 fiefs, which are thought to have later developed into the Kasuga Manor. There is a map of Uzuki Manor from 1329 (Karyaku 4), which gives us an idea of the whole picture. It was called the "main manor" of Horyuji Temple, and even at the end of the 15th century it held over 360 cho of rice paddies. However, due to the conflicts that arose during the process of forming the feudal domain, including the union of the "Sōjō Myōshū" (manor headman) and the peasants, the practice gradually lost its merit, and in the first half of the 16th century (around Tenbun), only 17 kan 500 mon in annual tax was paid. Among the historical documents related to the manor, the "Kazuru-shō Hikitsuke" (Hikitsuke Documents) is a valuable document that shows the actual state of villages in the Middle Ages.
