An industrial city on the east coast of the Katiawar Peninsula in Gujarat, western India. Population 402,000 (1991). It was founded in 1723 by the Gohel clan, a Rajput tribe that settled in the area in the 13th century. During the British colonial period, it was the capital of the princely state of the same name, and was the city until independence. The city distributes cotton, rice, and timber, and in addition to traditional industries such as cotton and silk textiles and musical instruments, it is home to industries such as oil refining, bakelite, rubber, pulp, paper, and steel furniture.
