Indian thinkers called speculation and insight into human existence and the world on which it relies darśana, a noun derived from the verb meaning "to see," and Western and Indian scholars translate it as philosophy. Darśana also includes philosophical inquiry, which is carried out solely by theoretical speculation and not by the authority of scriptures, but Indian thinkers include within darśana the Hindu systems of Buddhism, Jainism, and Vedanta philosophy, which are today called religions.
