A village in Kamimashiki County, eastern Kumamoto Prefecture. Population 3,489 (1995). It borders Miyazaki Prefecture to the northeast. The northern part of the village, which is long and narrow from north to south, is on the southeastern slope of the Aso outer rim, while the southern part is dominated by mountains that belong to the Kyushu Mountains, such as Mt. Sakisaka (1,684m). The Midorikawa River flows west through the center, and National Route 218 runs along the river. About 70% of the employees are engaged in agriculture and forestry, and in addition to rice, livestock farming, sericulture, highland vegetables, shiitake mushrooms and other production are carried out. The southern mountain area, which is part of the Yabe Surrounding Prefectural Natural Park, produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber. 熊本県東部,上益城(かみましき)郡の村。人口3489(1995)。北東は宮崎県に接する。南北に細長い村域の北部は阿蘇外輪山の南東斜面にあたり,南部は向坂(さきさか)山(1684m)など九州山地に属する山々が占める。中央部を緑川が西流し,川沿いに国道218号線が通じる。就業者の約7割は農林業に従事し,米作に加えて畜産,養蚕,高冷地野菜・シイタケなどの生産が行われ,矢部周辺県立自然公園に属する南部山地では杉,ヒノキの良材を産する。
