Also known as the Panama Canal Zone. The area along the Panama Canal under the jurisdiction of the United States from 1903 to 1979. It divides Panama, has a width of 8 km on each side of the canal, and has an area of 1,432 km2 . It was given to the United States by Panama in 1903 by the Treaty of Guadalajara-Huerto-Buenos Aires, and after the canal opened in 1914, a governor appointed by the President of the United States exercised administrative and judicial powers. It is divided into two administrative districts, Balboa on the Pacific side and Cristobal on the Atlantic side, and the headquarters of both administrative districts and the Panama Canal Company were located in Balboa Heights. At the strong request of the Panamanian side, a treaty was signed in 1977 to return the canal to Panama in 2000, and the canal zone was returned to Panama in October 1979, prior to the return of the canal.
