Polyvinylidene chloride

A polymer of vinylidene chloride CH ₂ =CCl _2. It is also called vinylidene chloride resin. It is often used in plastic films and synthetic fibers. Vinylidene chloride is structurally similar to chloroethylene (vinyl chloride) and is manufactured from vinyl chloride. Synthetic fibers and packaging films, such as Saran and Krehalon, are made by copolymerizing 75-90% vinylidene chloride with 25-10% vinyl chloride. The thick extruded monofilament is used in large quantities in beautifully colored tents, sunshades, beach umbrellas, insect screens, mosquito nets, and other products. This fiber is flexible, yet strong, flame-retardant, and weather-resistant. The film is almost impermeable to gases and moisture, and is also resistant to chemicals, so it is used in homes as food packaging. It is particularly suitable as a film for vacuum packaging or packaging with inert gas. The production volume was 64,000 tons (2002). As with polyvinyl chloride, the by-production of dioxins during heating and incineration is a problem.

塩化ビニリデンCH₂=CCl₂の重合体（ポリマー）。塩化ビニリデン樹脂ともいう。プラスチックフィルム、合成繊維によく用いられる。塩化ビニリデンはクロロエチレン（塩化ビニル）と構造がよく似ており、塩化ビニルから製造される。塩化ビニリデン75～90％に対し、塩化ビニル25～10％の割合で共重合させたものが、サランやクレハロンという商品名の合成繊維や包装用フィルムである。太めに押し出してつくった単繊維が美しい色彩のテント、日覆い、ビーチパラソルや防虫網、蚊帳(かや)などに多量に使われている。この繊維はしなやかで、しかもじょうぶで難燃性や耐候性に富んでいる。フィルムは気体や湿気をほとんど通さないし、また薬品などにも侵されないので食品包装用として家庭においても使用されている。とくに真空包装用または不活性ガス封入包装用フィルムとして好適である。生産量は6.4万トン（2002）である。ポリ塩化ビニルと同じく加熱焼却時のダイオキシンの副生が問題である。
