Aghat'amar (English spelling)

A small island on Lake Van in eastern Turkey. Surb Hacchi (Holy Cross) Church, built in the early 10th century, remains. The church was built by King Gagik (reigned 908-936) of the Arzurunid dynasty, who ruled the Basprakan region of the Kingdom of Armenia. With a dome in the center of a quatrefoil plan, and high niches and exedras supporting a tambour, it is one of the masterpieces of Armenian architecture (Armenian art) of this period. The entire exterior wall is richly decorated with reliefs depicting scenes from the Old Testament and the Life of Christ, as well as images of donors, making it a valuable structure unparalleled in the 10th century.

トルコ東部，バン湖上の小島。10世紀初めに建てられたスルブ･ハッチ(聖十字架)教会が残る。この教会は，アルメニア王国のバスプラカン地方の支配者であったアルツルニ家の王ガギック(在位908‐936)が建立。四葉形プランの中央にドームを架け，ニッチとエクセドラが高く伸びて鼓胴(タンブール)を支える構造で，この時期のアルメニア建築(アルメニア美術)の代表作の一つ。外壁全体に，旧約伝，キリスト伝の諸場面や寄進者の像を描く浮彫が豊かに施され，これは10世紀には他に例を見ない貴重なものである。
