A village in Taki County, central Mie Prefecture. Population 5,418 (1995). A farming and mountain village in the middle reaches of the Kushida River, the Kii Mountain Range is widely distributed, and the lowlands open up along the Kushida River, which flows in the north, and the Nigori River, a tributary of the Miyagawa River, which flows in the south. Rice, tobacco, and tea are cultivated on the river terraces of the Kushida River. Forestry is also practiced, and shiitake mushroom cultivation is also popular. There are many ruins from the Pre-Pottery to Yayoi periods, and Nyu is home to Nyu Shrine, which has been known as a mercury production area since the Nara period, as well as Jinguji Temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism Yamashina school, famous for Nyu Daishi, and Saidoji Temple, which has the Important Cultural Property "Eden of Honen Shonin." 三重県中部,多気郡の村。人口5418(1995)。櫛田川中流域の農山村で,紀伊山地に属する山地が広く分布し,低地は北部を流れる櫛田川と南部を流れる宮川支流の濁川沿いに開ける。櫛田川の河岸段丘面を利用して米作やタバコ,茶の栽培が行われる。ほかに林業も営まれ,シイタケ栽培も盛ん。先土器~弥生時代の遺跡が多く,丹生(にう)は,奈良時代から水銀の産地として知られた丹生神社とともにあり,丹生大師の名で有名な真言宗山階派の神宮寺や,重要文化財の《法然上人絵伝》を有する西導寺がある。
