Narumi

A haiku poet from the late Edo period. Mr. Natsume. His given name was Tsuyoshi. He was born into a wealthy bill-broker's family in Kuramae, Edo, and inherited the family title at the age of 16. He was commonly known as Izutsuya Hachiroemon (5th generation). Learning from his father, he started haiku from an early age, and at the age of 15, he was included in Shoan's Inoshishi Musha (1763) under the pen name Hachiroji. The following year, he changed his pen name to Shigemi. His other pen names included Zuisai and Shizan Dojin. At one time, he was close to the second generation Gito, but he enjoyed haiku without belonging to any school. He was a well-rounded person with the air of a wealthy man, and was close to Kitou, Juukou, and Socho, but he was especially known as a patron of Issa. His style of haiku is clear and elegant. He was also skilled in writing, and his works include the anthology Shizanko (1821), the anthology Zuisaikaiwa (1819), and the commentary Shichibushusanko (date of publication unknown). He is also known for nine haiku diaries, including Sugibashira. He is considered one of the four great haiku poets of the Edo period.

江戸後期の俳人。夏目氏。名は包嘉。江戸蔵前の富裕な札差(ふださし)の家に生まれ、16歳で家督を継ぐ。通称井筒屋八郎右衛門（5代目）。父に習って幼時から俳諧(はいかい)を始め、15歳のおりに松庵撰(しょうあんせん)『猪武者(いのししむしゃ)』（1763）に八郎治の号で入集(にっしゅう)。翌年、成美と改号。別号随斎、四山道人など。一時は2世祇徳(ぎとく)に親しんだこともあるが、流派に属さずに俳諧を楽しんだ。人格円満で長者の風を備え、几董(きとう)、重厚(じゅうこう)、巣兆(そうちょう)らと親しかったが、とくに一茶(いっさ)の庇護(ひご)者として知られる。句風は平明で清雅。文章にも長じ、文集『四山藁(こう)』（1821刊）や俳話集『随斎諧話』（1819刊）、注釈書『七部集纂考(さんこう)』（成立年不明）等があり、また、『杉ばしら』ほか9点の句日記も知られる。化政期江戸俳壇四大家の一人とされる。
