Iconology

Japanese: イコノロジー(英語表記)iconology
Iconology
It is translated as iconography. Like iconography, it originated from a compound word of eikon (image) and logos (word) (Plato's Phaedrus), and in the Renaissance it developed into an attempt to interpret and systematize the symbolic meanings of ancient gods and allegorical images (C. Ripa's Iconologia, 1593). The term was revived by E. Panofsky. While the content of iconography is in opposition to the form of the work, a more essential understanding is said to progress to grasping and interpreting the worldview that is the basis of the work, combined with an intuitive recognition of the form. This was greatly influenced by E. Cassirer's "philosophy of symbolic form," which is an important aspect of today's art history, and is currently being developed into a theory of semantics of images in general (semiology). Architectural iconography (R. Krautheimer) is also being carried out, which questions the meaning of not only images but also architecture from its form and function. In Japan and the Orient, there has been a long-standing tradition of iconography (→Buddhist iconography).
