From May 1521, during the nine months he was under protection at Wartburg Castle, he spent about ten weeks translating the New Testament from the then common Latin translation, the Vulgate, into German, referring to the Greek text. This was eventually published in Wittenberg in September 1522, with 3,000 copies printed, a large number for the time, and is therefore called the September Bible.
