…The Reformer Luther insisted that Christian faith should be based solely on the Bible. From May 1521, during the nine months he was under protection at Wartburg Castle, he spent about ten weeks translating the New Testament from the then common Latin translation, the Vulgate, into German, referring to the Greek text. This was eventually published in Wittenberg in September 1522, with 3,000 copies printed, a large number for the time, and is therefore called the September Bible. It is said that at least 14 German translations, including partial translations, existed before Luther, but Luther's translation gained so many readers that a second edition of 3,000 copies had to be reprinted that same year. …
