Joruri Gidayubushi. Historical piece. 10 stages. Collaboration between Chikamatsu Hanji and Chikamatsu Kasuke. First performed in April 1783 (Tenmei 3) at the Takemotoza Theater in Osaka. This dramatizes the incident in 1634 (Kan'ei 11) when Araki Mataemon helped his brother-in-law Watanabe Kazuma to kill Kawai Matagoro, the enemy of his father-in-law. The play is based on the kabuki play "Iga-goe Norikake Gappa" (first performed in 1776) written by Nagakawa Kamesuke, and as the title suggests, the process of revenge is likened to a road game of sugoroku, with the protagonist passing through Kamakura, Koriyama, Numazu, Okazaki, and other places, and ending with the revenge in Iga Ueno. In September of the same year, it was adapted into a Kabuki play, and has since become a representative work of the "Iga Koshimono" series. Chapter 1 (Kamakura) to Chapter 5 (Koriyama): Sawai Matagoro, a vassal of the Uesugi clan, kills Wada Yukie, an old vassal of the clan, and flees. Karaki Masaemon, the husband of Yukie's daughter Otani, is given leave by his lord Honda Naiki to assist his brother-in-law Shizuma. Chapter 6 (Numazu): Shizuma's lover Oyone is searching for Tekimatagoro under her father Kumosuke Heisaku's care in Numazu. One day, Heisaku's son Jubei, a kimono shop owner who was adopted by another family a long time ago, comes to stay at the house. Heisaku learns that Jubei has ties to Sawai and tries to find out where the enemy is in Senbonmatsubara, but Jubei, who is loyal, refuses to reveal anything, so he commits suicide and asks for the whereabouts of Matagoro with his dying ears, and has Okome listen in. Chapter 8 (Okazaki) - Searching for the enemy and breaking through the Fujikawa checkpoint, Masaemon happens to stay at the home of his old teacher, Yamada Kobei, in Okazaki. Kobei initially asks Masaemon for help in siding with his daughter's fiancé, Matagoro, but is touched by Masaemon's sense of loyalty, having driven away his wife, Otani, and even killed his infant child, and gives up on the idea. "Numazu" is a famous scene that dramatically depicts Heisaku's spirit and Jubei's agony, caught between duty and love, and in Kabuki, in particular, the hanamichi and the audience seats are used to vividly express the sentiments of the journey. "Okazaki" is a profound tragedy set against a snowy backdrop, and is one of the most difficult pieces in the history of Gidayu.
