Kamihayashi [village] - Kamihayashi

Japanese: 神林[村] - かみはやし

A village in Iwafune County in northern Niigata Prefecture. Population 10,989 (1995). Located at the northernmost tip of the Echigo Plain, on the north bank of the Arakawa River downstream, it consists of the floodplains of the Arakawa River and the low marshes of the former Iwafunegatana Lagoon. To the west, it consists of the northern end of the Kambara Sand Dunes and faces the Sea of Japan. In the Middle Ages, Hirabayashi was the territory of the Irobe clan, and the ruins of Hirabayashi Castle, built on Yogayama (Kagoyama), have been designated a prefectural historic site as a typical medieval mountain castle. Kannogo is a producer of Arakawa rice, known as early-season rice, and is a grain-producing region where rice is the only crop, but in recent years it has become more diversified, incorporating livestock farming and other methods, and food processing is also thriving.

新潟県北部，岩船郡の村。人口1万0989(1995)。越後平野の最北端，荒川下流の北岸に位置し，荒川のはんらん原とかつての岩船潟の低湿地からなる。西は蒲原砂丘の北端部からなり，日本海に面する。平林は，中世には色部氏の領地で，要害山(加護山)に築かれた平林城跡は中世の典型的山城として県史跡に指定されている。神納郷は早場米として知られる荒川米の産地で，水田単作の穀倉地帯であるが，近年は畜産などをとり入れた複合経営化が進み，食品加工も盛ん。
