(1) The first ecumenical council was convened in Nicaea (Greek name: Nicea, now Nicaea) in Asia Minor in 325 by the Roman Emperor Constantine I. It declared Arians a heresy and adopted the Nicene Creed, which forms the core of orthodox faith. Athanasius was an active member of the council. (2) The seventh ecumenical council was held in the same place in 787.
